TO the point where I was taking and razing entire cities with just a single dwarven firstborn. Then on third mission and all missions later on, I rushed very hard. The human dreadnought didn’t stand a chance cuz of it. Then with my horde of units, i made sure to rush the last AI hard. What saved me is that he didn’t get to pull global assault off. Then I ran into problems but eventually overcame the orc’s massed manticore spam with nothing but Chargers, Crushers and flyers and autoresolving it all winning through attrition. I settled and explored and had my merry way. Then 2nd mission where you play as draconian dude. I remember playing the campaign on first day of release.įirst mission of elven court was done with no problems at all except for the part where i found out my spearmen couldn’t climb the walls and I was like well uhoh xD I won’t be playing the campaign unless they change this. I literally take the AI down on the side with my spare production, only making any units ( basic units) if the AI gets uppity. I can spend most of my production on settlers if I wish, and move very slowly, without any threat mounting from the AI. The first scenario’s AI is disabled from making units even on hard mode. The AI will take your abandoned front, but doesn’t press the attack if I don’t wish to mount a force to assault it, I walk past it and take something less defended from behind. In either scenario, once something is dead, the AI doesn’t replace it’s forces. The AI makes an assault from behind at one point in the elven scenario, but so what? Retreat and take care of it. Yes, the AI in the first scenario will take an undefended settlement, if you totally abandon the front line, but because it is disabled from making new units, this just divides it’s forces. Remember that part of the reason I remember the first two games, and their stories, fondly, is because of adversity! Otherwise they’d have become boring quite quickly! I can always translate the Rites of Zhou and come back later, with the hopes that my preferred difficulty mode has returned to the franchise. I understand the need to reach a larger audience, so I am patient with triumph in adding any kind of difficulty to the campaign (in the case, the first scenario, which I have never bothered moving beyond). Not because I am “pro” or something, but because If I didn’t want hard mode, I wouldn’t buy strategy game. But, given that you’ve progressed to slower paced games that are entirely strategy based, maybe AoW 3 isn’t for you? (And I say this as someone who plays CKII a lot myself) Unfortunately, without actually knowing how Elikal is playing the game (what his strategy is etc), I can’t really advise him on how to correct his playstyle. It is very rare that I have made a mistake that I couldn’t get out of with some careful thought (The ones I couldn’t are ones where I have been too rash and risked one of the heroes who need to survive the campaign scenarios). Age of Wonders 3 is far more forgiving about mistakes, even at the second highest difficulty (which is my preferred setting after working my way up through the difficulties). I actually think the old games are more difficult in every single way.Īgreed, given I started with AoW3 and worked back to the others. This is exactly the same as the old games………. Do you go left or right? There is no way to say, but if you chose wrong, based on no info at all, BLAMMO DEAD. I would like to play it, but I don’t play games to feel miserable!Īnd often you just can’t know. I understand some people want it that way, but that is what difficulty settings are for! This is one of my biggest regrets I bought a game ever. ONE mistake, one false decision, one move waiting too long, and BLAMMO. The game is THE most unforgiving game I have EVER played. Especially the last few keeps are often FULL to the brim with mobs, and when I finally managed to unlock the 2nd scenario, I was again beaten over and over and over.Įven getting ahead means: play a few rounds, go back to savegame, try different way. If I bunker in and build strength, securing all holdings, he outbuilds me and I face armies in superior numbers 4 or 5 to 1. If I move on fast, the enemy destroys my lines of support from behind. I lost the first scenario 5 or 6 times in a row. And truth be told, the enemy just grills me. And I am talking about the Campaign here, not random matches. So I would call myself an experienced gamer. See, I play strategy games for 30 years on computer, even back to C64 days. Second, I am a fan of Age of Wonders since the first game, so it feels important enough for me. You don’t have to like it, but it IS my right. But… first off I am a paying customer, so I guess it is my right to say my feedback.
